Who are the
picky locals?
Born in Iceland, HandPicked is slowly growing into a multi-national network of picky locals who care about their community, get excited about discovering new authentic gems, and love helping people get the most out of their trip to a new, foreign place, just like a good friend would.
Every single experience you’ll find in our printed guides and digital platforms is an honest recommendation from people who’ve been there, done that. We only pick businesses that share our values: local, authentic, and sustainable.
Our Story
HandPicked began in Iceland in 2010, sparked by a simple frustration. I was traveling around the country with my husband and three kids, and one evening, after days of camp meals, we decided to treat ourselves to a proper meal. But even as an Icelander, I couldn’t find what I was looking for. That’s when I realized: most travelers in Iceland, even the locals, struggle to find the real gems. So I turned to my trusted circle of picky friends, asked for their favorites, and turned it into a list on an illustrated map in my lifestyle magazine, Live Better.
Readers loved it! And so did the restaurant owners, super happy to be showcased alongside other carefully selected local gems. That’s how HandPicked was born.
We Care About
The Environment
HandPicked is privately owned and run by me, Gigi (Guðbjörg Gissurardóttir). The guides are printed in an eco-friendly print shop, and the team has planted over 6,000 trees, giving back to nature. One fun fact: in 2013, I got a nomination for the Publishing Awards from the Ministry for the Environment and Natural Resources, nothing less!
Our Transparency Promise
At HandPicked, it’s all about trust, quality, and mutual support. We don’t rely on attention-grabbing ads or big sponsors. Instead, we work directly with carefully selected local businesses. They pay a small fee to join the HandPicked family, which helps us keep the guide free for travelers and focused on highlighting places that truly deserve the spotlight. We see it as a win-win!
